“Supongo que no soy lo suficientemente country para algunas personas y soy demasiado country para otras”.
Sin embargo, todavía se enfrenta regularmente a las críticas tanto de los puristas del country como de los detractores del pop, ya que pasa de las voces invitadas a los estilos country fritos del éxito “Craving You” de Thomas Rhett en 2017 a la electrónica fría y vanguardista de “The Middle” de Zedd y Gris en 2018.
Morris, que ahora tiene 31 años, nunca ha tenido reparos en colaborar y también ha cantado con la ex-boyband de élite Niall Horan, la megaestrella Taylor Swift y se unió a la liga country it-girl The Highwomen con Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby y Amanda Shires.
Pero cuando su amiga y compañera tejana Kacey Musgraves la introdujo en el mundo de la composición de canciones de Nashville, no hubo vuelta atrás.
Recibiendo el premio a Artista Femenina del Año en los Premios de la Academia de Música Country 2021 dijo: “Por primera vez, pude escribir canciones sin una línea de tiempo, sin presión. Fue realmente liberador escribir solo para mí y no para la industria”.
Ella honra su vida con el delicado “¿Qué haría este mundo?” “Fue un proceso tan catártico y curativo para mí poner estas canciones en curso”, admite.
Se sumergió en nuevos temas con entusiasmo, escribiendo canciones como “Hummingbird”, una canción íntima y sobria sobre su hijo, Hayes.
Morris se casó con el también cantautor Ryan Hurd en 2018, y aunque el aura suave de su brillo de recién casada se desvaneció durante el encierro del covid, sus canciones de amor se han vuelto un poco menos sobre el vértigo y las mariposas y más sobre la ilustración de un chico enamorado. También el esposo está en muchas de sus canciones, ya sea que ayude a escribirlas o que sean sobre él.
“Algunas de las canciones del proyecto no podrían haber sido creadas si no hubiéramos pasado de los 40, épocas en las que nos destrozábamos”, se ríe.
